M61 closed after serious crash with air ambulance at scene - traffic updates

The M61 motorway has been closed northbound after reports of a serious collision.

A large emergency services presence has been reported and according to motorists stuck in traffic, the air ambulance is also at the scene.

It's not yet know whether anyone has been injured in the incident, but long tailbacks of queuing traffic are being reported.

Traffic reports confirmed a closure of a northbound stretch of the busy motorway near to junction five and the A58, for Syndale Way and Westhoughton.

A lane on the opposite southbound side of the motorway has also been closed. The collision is believed to have occurred at around 10.25am on Wednesday, although further details haven't yet been confirmed.

Motorists are being asked to use a diversion taking in the entry and exit slip roads.

A spokesman said all passengers were 'assessed on scene' and no one was taken to hospital.

The traffic monitoring service Inrix said:

Queueing traffic and two lanes closed due to accident on M61 Northbound at J5 A58 Snydale Way (Westhoughton). Congestion to past J4 (Farnworth).

There is also a lane closed on the southbound side. Incident occurred at around 10.25 which closed the road for around thirty five minutes before lane one (of three) re-opened.

National Highways has confirmed lanes two and three have been closed northbound, with one southbound lane also closed.

Delays of around 30 minutes are being reported.
