BREAKING: Cordon in place on town centre street with police and fire crews on scene - latest updates

A police cordon is in place on a street in Bury town centre this morning.

A stretch of Silver Street - which is lined with bars, restaurants and shops - has been taped off. The closure is in place between Broad Street and Bolton Street, according to Transport for Greater Manchester.

People have been urged to avoid the area. The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for further information.

A tweet posted by TfGM at around 5.25am this morning said: "ROAD CLOSED. Bury Centre: Silver St is closed between Broad St and Bolton St.

"This is due to an incident. Please seek an alternative route."
