M6 traffic LIVE updates as long queues build up following crash

Drivers are facing hour-long delays on the M6 near Greater Manchester as urgent repairs take place following a crash.

Two lanes of traffic have been closed on the northbound carriageway between junctions 27 at Standish and 28 at Leyland this morning (August 16).

There is also one lane of traffic closed on the southbound carriageway.

The collision took place in the early hours of the morning, but queues have since built up while the repairs take place.

A National Highways North West spokesperson said: "M6 both directions between J27 Wigan and J28 Leyland, Lancashire.

"Two lanes closed northbound and one lane closed southbound for central reservation replacement works after a collision early this morning.

"One hour delays and six miles of congestion northbound."

Heavy traffic in the Preston area is adding to congestion on the northbound carriageway, while queues tail back past junction 27 at Standish.

There also appear to be queues on the M61 northbound, which could be an alternative route for drivers looking to avoid the M6 delays.
