M6 traffic delays with motorway to shut as lorry overturns in early hours crash - latest updates
M6 motorists have been warned a southbound closure is likely this morning to allow for recovery work after a lorry overturned. A driver was injured after the lorry came off the carriageway and flipped.
One lane is currently closed from junction 24 to junction 23. National Highways have said a full carriageway closure will be required when recovery is on scene.
National Highways: North-West said in a Twitter update shortly after 5am: "Only 1 lane (of 3) is now closed on the #M6 southbound in #GreaterManchester between J24 (#StHelens) and J23 due to a lorry which has left the carriageway. A full carriageway closure will be required when recovery is on scene. Updates to follow."
Traffic information service Inrix added: "One lane closed due to overturned Lorry and recovery work on M6 Southbound from J24 A58 Liverpool Road (Ashton In Makerfield) to J23 A580 East Lancashire Road (Haydock). Lane one (of three) is closed. Recovery is expected to be ongoing throughout the morning."
North West Motorway Police confirmed they are currently at the scene, and said there is "one lucky driver with slight injuries". The news comes as millions of motorists are expected to take to the country's roads for the Easter weekend getaway. Follow our live blog for more updates as we get them.
