Luke McNally offers perfect blend as Vincent Kompany phone call emphasises Burnley transfer pull

Luke McNally couldn't quite believe it when his phone rang and it was Vincent Kompany discussing the possibility of coming to Burnley.

But the 22-year-old is now able to call the Premier League legend his manager after completing his move to Turf Moor. The centre back has arrived on a four year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £2million.

He impressed for Oxford United last season and leaves the League One club just 18 months after arriving from his homeland. His character and ability suggest Burnley have uncovered another defensive gem.

McNally is grounded but ambitious and spoke of his desire to absorb information from Kompany in a bid to improve. On the pitch he has an eye for goal and at 6ft 4ins has the physical profile to compete in the Championship while his progressive ball-playing will suit the style Burnley will play under their new manager.

"I defend first and foremost but there is more requirements to a centre half than being a good defender and I like to think I have improved on the ball a lot and I hope to excite the fans," said McNally after signing.

Kompany greeted the new boy with a 'how are you big fella?' and a hug and a handshake. It's clear the Belgian will have a big pull in attracting new faces and it was no different with McNally.

"The manager is probably the main thing," he added. "To learn off someone like that who has been one of the best not only in this league and country but in the world. I will learn as much as I can."

The new boy didn't seem star struck when the introductions were made at Gawthorpe but the youngster admits hearing of Kompany's desire to get him to Turf Moor was surreal news to receive.
