Gillingham 2 Tranmere Rovers 0: League Two match report from Priestfield Stadium

Gillingham made it back-to-back wins in League Two with a victory over previously unbeaten Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

Young defender Logan Dobbs headed the Gills in front midway through the second half and Ronan Hale doubled the lead, although he picked up an injury, possibly in the process of celebrating.

Gills manager Gareth Ainsworth had spoken ahead of the match about the importance of good home form if they want to be successful this season.

Unbeaten in four ahead of the weekend and seeking their first win of the season at Priestfield, the Gills delivered.

Gillingham had made two enforced changes following the 4-1 win at Rochdale the week before.

Zech Obiero (hamstrings) and Will Goodwin (ankle) were out, replaced in the XI by Robbie McKenzie and Eli King.

Hale moved into the central attacking role while Harry Waldock moved forward on the left side of attack.

It was a fairly even opening half with both sides showing some good attacking intent.

James Brophy scored two brilliant goals the week before and denied Tranmere one at Priestfield with a clearance off the line to deny Dylan Jones. He fired at goal after Joel Senior’s angled effort had been saved witha foot by keeper Ollie Wright.

Waldock had a shot saved and Omar Beckles went closer with a diving header from Brophy’s free-kick into the box but keeper Luke McGee saved.

Jones fired wide for the visitors as the interval came with the game still goalless.

Waldock’s afternoon ended early in the second half, replaced by Garath McCleary, after being unable to carry on with an injury that he’d seemingly been struggling with throughout, having gone down for treatment in the opening half.
