Livingston Women's match winner Gemma Mason hopes victory can be catalyst for title push

Gemma Mason says she hopes her last ditch winner against Ayr United can be the catalyst for a charge at the Championship South title.

The midfielder curled a cracker of a free-kick into the top corner with the last kick of the game to seal a 2-1 win at the Tony Macaroni Arena and keep the Lionesses in the promotion hunt.

They sit in fifth place but just four points behind leaders Gartcairn in a congested top of the table.

She said: “I don’t normally take the free-kicks but Rachel (Walkingshaw) was out and Shannon (Mulligan) takes plenty too and we were lining up together.

“I told Shannon she could take it but she gave it to me and gave me a pep talk – so she’s probably claiming all the credit for it.

“I had Shannon in one ear and the ref in the other telling me that it was the last kick of the ball so there was no pressure there at all.”

She added: “It’s a crucial win because we’re getting to that stage of the season where draws aren’t really good enough with the league being so tight, so to win the game in that manner was amazing and it could be a huge two points gained come the end of the season.

“We created plenty of chances and just kept at it so it was really pleasing for us to get the win in the end.

“The first half we were maybe trying a wee bit too hard but in the second half we just got back to playing our game and playing for each other.

“The team spirit in the group is amazing and that’s all I think it was – battling and working as hard as possible for each other – and it paid off.”

Livi have suffered just one defeat in their 14 games but three draws have held them back slightly.
