Liverpool FC star Mohamed Salah posts 'devastated' message after Man United secure top-four spot

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has admitted he is 'devastated' not to have secured Champions League football after Manchester United's 4-1 win at home to Chelsea.

United cruised past a lacklustre Chelsea side on Thursday evening, with goals from Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford earning a commanding victory at Old Trafford. Three points secured a place in the top four for Erik ten Hag's side who go into the final game six points ahead of Liverpool in fifth.

Jurgen Klopp's side piled on the pressure in recent weeks with six consecutive wins, but were unable to close the gap after a dreadful start to the season by their standards.

RATINGS: Casemiro and Lindelof good in Chelsea win

It is the first time since the 2016/2017 season that Liverpool have failed to finish in the Champions League places, and Salah took to social media to share his anger just minutes after the full-time whistle went at Old Trafford.

He tweeted: "I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down."

United will join Manchester City, Arsenal and Newcastle United in the Champions League next season after failing to make the top four last year.

Having wrapped it up on Thursday, Ten Hag will have the luxury of being able to rest players for their final day welcoming of Fulham to Old Trafford before an FA Cup final meeting with City next weekend.
