Liverpool can expose major problem with Mikel Arteta's Arsenal tactics

The improvements in Arsenal under Mikel Arteta make Wednesday’s trip to the Emirates a tough one on paper for Liverpool.

The North London side have won each of their last five Premier League matches and have suffered just one defeat in the league since the start of December. This has helped them climb the table and establish themselves as legitimate contenders to again qualify for the Champions League.

As things stand, Arteta’s men sit fourth in the table and just one point clear of Manchester United in fifth. They do boast games in hand on the teams around them, however with positions tight, they’ll be desperate to secure a big result against Jurgen Klopp's men this week.

Given their own standout record of eight straight league wins, Liverpool will travel to the capital full of confidence. Furthermore, there’s a strong case to be made that while Arsenal have undoubtedly improved, they still lack the capacity to overcome the division’s truly elite sides.

Their current five-game winning streak has came exclusively against sides situated seventh or below in the table and in fact, Arsenal are actually without a win vs any team inside the top five this season, losing all five of their league matches against such opponents.

They failed to score a single goal in three of those matches, one of which came against Liverpool when the Reds blew them away 4-0 at Anfield back in November. That was one of two defeats already to Liverpool this season, and the Reds dominance over Arteta’s Arsenal in recent encounters does hand them somewhat of a psychological edge.

Arsenal haven’t overcome Liverpool in 90 minutes since back in July 2020 when the Reds were already crowned Premier League champions.
