LIVE updates: Canal Street flooded, and roads closed amid Amber warning as region hit with New Year's Eve deluge

Flood alerts are in place on New Year's Eve as Greater Manchester and surrounding regions have been deluged with heavy rain.

Revellers heading to St Peter's Square in Manchester city centre sheltered from the heavy rain as they waited for the celebrations to start. Video from Canal Street showed a huge section of the street had been flooded.

A Met Office Amber weather warning showed parts of the Greater Manchester area were set to be hit by 'heavy rain' that's likely to 'lead to disruption including flooding in some locations'

The details also suggested the possibility that some areas could be cut off due to flooding and homes and businesses could be damaged.

Thousands of people are set to descend on the centre of Manchester this evening for a fireworks celebration seeing in the New Year.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has warned they are experiencing a 'high volume' of 999 calls relating to flooding tonight.

People are asked to only call 999 in an emergency. More here.

The A628 Woodhead Pass is impassable in both directions due to flooding between Tintwistle and A616 (Flouch Roundabout).
