LIVE updates as Manchester to Liverpool railway line blocked after a person 'hit by a train'

There's widespread disruption on trains between Manchester and Liverpool this afternoon following an 'emergency incident' on the line.

Operators are warning of cancellations and delays of up to an hour as the line between Warrington Central and Liverpool Lime Street the line is blocked. Replacement buses are being put on between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool.

Northern, Transpennine Express and eats Midlands services are all affected. In a statement National Rail said: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Liverpool South Parkway and Hunts Cross / Warrington Central.

"Whilst the emergency services carry out their work, all lines between these stations are closed. Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until 5.30pm."

National Rail has shared an update to X, telling passengers what they should do with their tickets and when delays are expected until.

They say: "You may use your Northern ticket at no additional cost onboard any alternative Northern, TransPennine Express or Merseyrail service via any reasonable route to complete your journey.

"You may use your ticket onboard the following services at no extra cost: - Metrolink between Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly - TranPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Victoria"

Merseyrail have released a statement on X saying a person has been hit by a train.

The statement says: "Hunts Cross & Ormskirk Line Due to a person being hit by a train, services will start & terminate at Liverpool South Parkway. Rail replacement buses are being organised to run between Liverpool South Parkway & Hunts Cross."
