Live updates as Maerdy Mountain fire leads to road closure with police and fire crews present

A large grass fire on a mountainside in Rhondda Cynon Taf has led to a main road being closed. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and officers from South Wales Police are in attendance at the fire beside the A4233 Maerdy Mountain Road on Monday afternoon.

The fire started at around 3.45pm. One resident took photographs of the smoke billowing from the mountain clearly visible from houses below. At 5.30pm the road was closed in both directions and traffic is slow in the area as a result.

In a post Rhondda Cynon Taf council wrote at 5.30pm: "Please be aware Maerdy Mountain Road (A4233) will shortly be closed due to a fire, following a request by the police. South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance. Please avoid the area."
