M6 closed with air ambulance called after 'car falls from bridge' - live updates

Part of the M6 has been closed following a crash which saw the air ambulance land at the scene. Other emergency service were also called to the smash in Cheshire after reports a car fell from a bridge.

And at one stage traffic on both the northbound and southbound carriageways near junction 17 for Sandbach was held. The southbound motorway was later released while traffic remains held on the northbound.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "Emergency services are responding to a collision, traffic has been held to allow an air ambulance to attend.

"Traffic remains held on the M6 northbound approaching J17 Congleton, Sandbach. There are several miles of congestion in both directions."

Traffic monitoring system Inrix is reporting an air ambulance is at the scene.

Police have now confirmed that a white Vauxhall Corsa came off the bridge over the M6 and overturned on the motorway below. The driver was taken to hospital by air ambulnace. His injuries are not through to be life-threatening.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said:

Shortly before 1.10pm on Monday, June 26, police were called to reports of an overturned car on the M6 near to junction 17.

The incident involved a white Vauxhall Corsa which had fallen from the bridge along the A534 Congleton Road onto the northbound carriageway of the motorway.

The M6 is currently closed northbound as a result of the incident and traffic is being diverted off the motorway and back on via the slip roads at junction 17.

The A534 is also closed between Sandbach and Congleton due to damage to the bridge.
