Live updates as explosive device closes part of Welsh beach

Part of the beach and coastal path at Mumbles, Swansea, has been cordoned off this afternoon [February 12] after an explosive device was found in a cave.

There is a police presence in the area while the force awaits specialists to carry out a controlled explosion. Photos from Mumbles show police on the beach this afternoon, with an eyewitness reporting that they weren't allowed near the lighthouse due to the incident.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “We were called just before 1:50pm this afternoon (Monday 12th February), with a report of an explosive device in a cave near the coastal path at Mumbles.

“Officers are in attendance and have established a cordon following Joint Service Explosive Ordnance Disposal (JSEOD) advice. The lighthouse and its surrounding area have been cleared.

“A JSEOD team is to attend to carry out a controlled explosion of the device.”
