LIVE: Two rushed to hospital after tanker overturns, with 'large quantity' of milk on motorway - latest updates

Motorists are facing delays on the M6 this morning after reports that a milk tanker has flipped over the central reservation.

Traffic has been brought to a standstill on the motorway between J32/M55 Broughton Interchange and J31 (Salmesbury). The carriageway is closed in both directions, with emergency services on the scene.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the route as traffic is turned round and redirected. The closure is expected to be in place for some time.

Traffic monitoring website, Inrix, said: "M6 in both directions closed, stationary traffic due to accident, a milk tanker involved between J32 M55 (Broughton Interchange) and J31 A59 Preston New Road (Samlesbury).

"Tanker has gone over the central reservation. Trapped traffic on the SB carriageway is being turned around and allowed to exit via J31a SB entry slip. Trapped traffic on the NB carriageway is being turned around and allowed to exit via J31 NB entry slip."

Lancashire Police has been contacted for comment.

"You may be aware the M6 is currently closed in both directions between Junctions 31 and 32 close to the Tickled Trout following a road traffic collision and we want to tell you what has happened.

Around 7am this morning (Sunday, July 2) a milk tanker travelling northbound collided with the central reservation, entering the southbound carriageway before overturning on to its side across the carriageway

A large quantity of milk and diesel has spilled onto the carriageway causing it to be closed.
