LIVE: Stretch of M56 fully shut after serious crash between car and lorry - latest updates

A stretch of the M56 is fully shut this afternoon after a serious crash between a car and a lorry.

The eastbound carriageway is closed between junction nine for the M6 and Lymm Interchange and junction seven for Bowdon. According to National Highways, emergency services including police, fire and paramedics are on the scene.

Traffic is heavy in the area, with queues building up to the closure. A diversion route has been put in place.

National Highways said: "The M56 in Cheshire is closed eastbound between J9 (M6/Lymm Interchange) and J7 (near Altrincham), due to a collision involving a car and lorry. The car struck the central reservation and nearside barrier.

"North West Motorway Police Group, Cheshire Fire & Rescue Services, North West Ambulance Services and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene."

Road users heading to Manchester, are advised to consider using the M6 and M62.

The Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said a 'casualty has been released from one of the vehicles'.

They said previously firefighters were 'stabilising one car containing a casualty'.
