BREAKING: Stretch of M6 closed in both directions due to 'police incident' - latest updates

A stretch of the M6 has been closed in both directions due to a 'police incident' near Wigan. All traffic has been stopped between junctions 27 at Standish and 28 at Leyland.

Traffic is being diverted away from the area. A National Highways North West spokesperson posted on X: "The #M6 is CLOSED in both directions between J27 (#Standish) and J28 (#Leyland) due to a @LancsPolice incident.

"Approaching traffic is being diverted at the scene. Please plan ahead of your journey if you are travelling through the area."

The incident has taken place on the northbound carriageway, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system. Further details about the nature of the incident are yet to be confirmed. Lancashire Police has been approached for comment.

A post on the National Highways website says:

"The M6 in Lancashire is closed in both directions between J27 (Standish) and J28 (Leyland) following a serious incident.

"Lancashire Police, North West Ambulance Service and National Highways Traffic Officers are all in attendance."

Police say the road is closed due to an ongoing incident.
