LIVE: Piccadilly Gardens fire as blaze breaks out above Burger King - latest updates

A fire has broken out in a building above Burger King in Manchester city centre this morning.

The blaze has broken out a number of floors up from the fast-food restaurant in Piccadilly Gardens. Firefighters and police are on the scene.

Pictures show smoke billowing from a window near the top of the building. A ladder and hoses are being used to extinguish the flames.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for further details.

We have been sent this video footage of the fire burning earlier.

A cordon remains in place around the affected building.

Emergency services remain on the scene this afternoon.

Pictures also show an ambulance incident response unit vehicle on the scene.

It has not yet been confirmed whether anyone was injured in the fire.

A GMP spokesperson confirmed officers have set up a cordon.

They are managing the crowd in Piccadilly Gardens.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said seven fire engines are now on the scene - with two joining from Gorton.

A number of police vehicles are also on the scene within the cordon.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:

“Shortly after 11am today (Friday February 1) five fire engines from Manchester Central, Moss Side, Salford, Blackley, and Broughton fire stations were called to reports of a fire involving a commercial building on Market Street, Manchester.
