LIVE: Cordon in place at Manchester cemetery with police and air ambulance at scene - latest updates

Part of Southern Cemetery in south Manchester has been cordoned off this afternoon amid an ongoing police incident. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, are at the graveyard off Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton.

Witnesses said a number of police vehicles and ambulances are also in attendance. Pictures from the scene show part of a roundabout near the Barlow Moor entrance taped off, with the air ambulance having landed within the cordon.

Further details about the ongoing incident are yet to be confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for more details. Southern Cemetery is the largest municipal cemetery in the UK and the resting place of several notable Mancunians, including Sir Matt Busy, Lowry and Tony Wilson.

Police have now confirmed they're investigating an attack on a 16-year-old girl. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries that are not thtought to be life-threatening

A GMP spokesperson said:

At around 11.40am today, officers received a report of an assault in Southern Cemetery, Manchester.

Officers attended and a girl, aged 16, was taken to hospital with serious injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Enquiries are currently ongoing.

We're still awaiting a statement from GMP, but it's understood police were called to Southern Cemetery earlier today following an attack on a female. It's understood it's not a sexual assault.
