Live M60 traffic updates as crash tonight leaves motorway closed in Greater Manchester

A stretch of the M60 has been shut tonight (Friday, January 3) after a crash.

The clockwise carriageway is closed to traffic between junction 22 at Hollinwood, Oldham, and junction 23 at Ashton-under-Lyne.

A diversion route has been put in place by traffic officers - with the closure first reported at around 8.30pm.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed clockwise between J22 near (Oldham) and J23 near (Ashton-Under-Lyne) due to a collision. Police are on scene. National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance to assist with traffic management."

According to traffic alert provider Inrix, the incident also involves a vehicle fire.

An update reads: "M60 clockwise closed due to accident and vehicle fire from J22 A62 Manchester Road (Failsworth) to J23 A635 Manchester Road (Ashton Under Lyne)."

Traffic is appearing to build in advance of the closure. Here is an image showing the situation at junction 21.

A diversion has been put in place to allow motorists to rejoin the M60 past the site of the crash.

Drivers are being asked to follow the diversion signs, which will take them in this direction.

National Highways said: "Police are on scene. National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance to assist with traffic management."
