Live M6 updates as crash near Stoke-on-Trent sees lorry overturn and motorway closed

The M6 motorway is closed in North Staffordshire tonight (Friday, August 8) after a crash saw a lorry overturn.

The northbound carriageway is shut to traffic between Junction 14 (Stafford) and Junction 15 (Stoke-on-Trent) - with two lanes also closed on the southbound carriageway as a result of the incident.

The closure was first reported at around 10.30pm, with National Highways saying it is likely to remain in place for some time.

All emergency services are currently at the scene and traffic cameras show delays building and a diversion route is in place via the A34 and the A500.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M6 in Staffordshire is closed northbound between J14 (Stafford) and J15 (Stoke on Trent) due to a serious collision involving an overturned lorry.

"All emergency services including Staffordshire Police are in attendance.

"National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.

"The vehicle has struck and damaged the concrete central reservation barrier and caused a significant spillage of diesel across the carriageway. As a result, it's expected that the road will be closed for some time."

The M6 northbound remains closed between Junction 14 and Junction 15 in Staffordshire.

Inrix, the traffic data company, reports two lanes are also shut on the southbound carriageway.

It states:

M6 Northbound closed due to overturned lorry from J14 A34 (Stafford North) to J15 A500 D Road (Stoke-On-Trent).

Lanes three and four are also closed southbound."
