LIVE: Firefighters tackle huge blaze with people urged to 'avoid area' - latest updates

Firefighters have been tackling a huge blaze in Stockport this morning.

The fire broke out at a commercial unit on Cromwell Road in the Bredbury area at around midnight today (Thursday). Pictures showed huge plumes of smoke coming from the scene on the industrial estate.

Fire crews have been on the scene overnight. Residents who live nearby have been urged to keep their windows and doors shut due to the smoke, with people also urged to 'avoid the area'.

In a post on X at around 2.15am, the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters are in attendance at a fire involving a commercial unit on Cromwell Road, Bredbury in Stockport. Nearby residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed and to avoid the area."

A stretch of Cromwell Road is closed in both directions due to the fire this morning.

According to traffic alert service Inrix, it is shut from Ashton Road to Far Cromwell Road.
