'Like a psychopath' - Andy van der Meyde opens up on controversial Everton comments and regrets

Andy van der Meyde has spoken of his regret for comments he has previously made about Everton as well as admitting that he acted like a 'psychopath' during his time at the club.

In a new interview the former Blues winger has opened up on his four years with the club, which were plagued by off-field indiscretions and difficulties, which included alcohol and family problems.

But writing in his 2012 autobiography, Van der Meyde took aim at Everton, David Moyes and some of his former team-mates. While in a separate interview a couple of years ago, the Dutchman claimed there were only two players at the club when he was there who 'could play football'.

Back then he said: "In 2003 I moved to Inter, had two years there and then I moved to Everton for four years. [It was] S***, ah s***. There were only two players who could play football, the rest were just running and kicking the ball. It's unbelievable."

But reflecting on those comments, the Dutchman has admitted that he regrets 'throwing away' his opportunity at Goodison Park and comments he has previously made about the club.

“I wrote the book soon after my career and when I was telling the stories, I was back in that moment,” he told the Everton matchday programme.

“I had a lot of aggression in me. I said some bad things about Everton, some stupid things. I was not thinking straight.

“I could see clearly after I rested my head. I regret what I said. A few years later, I was thinking: 'Andy, man, you really messed up'.

“It is really a shame. I think about it a lot, actually, you know? Still now my football career goes through my head.
