Leicester City striker to 'see what future holds' after strong end to season

Leicester City striker George Hirst will “see what the future holds” after he ended his Portsmouth loan spell in a terrific run of form.

Hirst scored against his boyhood club Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of the League One campaign on Saturday to finish with 15 goals in all competitions, making him Portsmouth’s top scorer. From March onwards, he bagged 10 in 14.

The 23-year-old has a year remaining on his City contract and is now waiting to see what pans out over the summer and into next season. He certainly enjoyed his spell at Fratton Park.

Writing on social media, Hirst said: “Forever grateful for the opportunity to have played for your amazing club, to all the fans who have supported me this season through good times and bad, to the staff for helping me improve as a player, and to all the boys I’ve shared the pitch with this season who have made me feel a part of the family, it’s been a pleasure. I can’t thank you all enough. Time to rest up and see what the future holds.”

Manager Danny Cowley is hopeful of keeping Hirst after his end to the campaign. The forward had a difficult start to life at Pompey, taking until his 13th appearance to find the net, following on from a season at Rotherham the year before where he failed to score.

"George has done great and really kicked on in the second-half of the season,” Cowley said. “He is continuing to grow and we have worked really hard with him, and I want to give him the credit because he came off the back of a difficult season at Rotherham United.

“He had an injury and was probably five or six weeks behind the group physically. He has worked really, really hard to find this form and we are proud of him.
