Leicester City stars open up on injuries as defender makes new season vow

James Justin has been ruled out of England’s clash with Germany but could yet feature again before the Nations League matches are over.

The Leicester City full-back was substituted at half-time during his senior international debut on Saturday as England lost 1-0 to Hungary, and while the 24-year-old had a calf complaint, manager Gareth Southgate also suggested his withdrawal was tactical.

That calf issue will prevent Justin from making an appearance in Munich on Tuesday night as England play the second of their Nations League games. But in positive news, Justin could be available when the Three Lions return home for a pair of fixtures against Italy and Hungary at Wolves’ Molineux.

Jannik Vestergaard is “highly motivated” to return to Leicester City and get himself back into the first-team picture next season. The Danish defender did not play a single minute of the club’s final 16 Premier League matches of the campaign after injury comebacks for the likes of Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans saw him drop down the pecking order.

His only league appearances in 2022 came in the 3-2 home defeat to Tottenham, in which he played 90 minutes, and in the 2-2 draw with West Ham, in which he was brought on for injury time, during which Craig Dawson scored an equaliser. But he did play in the FA Cup victory over Watford and the pair of wins over Danish side Randers, while he also helped City see out an aggregate victory at Rennes in the Europa Conference League.
