Leeds: 20 y/o 'expected' to stay on loan despite 'recall option' at Elland Road

Leeds United starlet Charlie Cresswell is likely to stay with Millwall for the remainder of the season despite the Elland Road outfit boasting a ‘recall option’, according to Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton.

While Whites boss Jesse Marsch spent close to £100million during the summer transfer window, Cresswell headed out of Yorkshire in search of regular first-team football.

Cresswell completed a season-long loan move to Millwall in July and has already made an impact in his new surroundings.

Despite featuring at the heart of the Lions’ backline, he marked his debut by grabbing both goals in a 2-0 win over Stoke City on the opening day of the campaign.

Cresswell has gone on to make 10 appearances for the Championship side and also found the back of the net in a victory over Cardiff City last month.

According to The Athletic, Millwall do not have an option to make the Leeds man’s move permanent and, although a loan fee was not paid, the Londoners are subject to penalty clauses if Cresswell is not handed enough game-time.

The report suggests Marsch could also recall the eight-cap England under-21 international in January, but only in an emergency.

Thornton understands that Leeds could opt to seal Cresswell’s return to Yorkshire at the turn of the year.

However, the Sky Sports reporter feels the central defender will remain with Millwall for the entirety of the initial loan agreement.

Thornton told GIVEMESPORT: “I think there’s a recall option, potentially in January.

“But I would expect him to stay at Millwall all season and then come back next season and try to force his way into the first team.”
