Kwon's St Mirren debut has Celtic fans on red alert as Stephen Robinson names the one quality loanee is missing

Stephen Robinson was delighted to see St Mirren’s Queens Gambit pay off as new recruit Kwon Hyeok-kyu made his first appearance for the club.

The Buddies boss was put through the ringer as his side struggled to break down Marvin Bartley’s Queen of the South side. But they kept at it and their patience was rewarded when Alex Gogic bulleted home a 71st-minute header to book their spot in the fifth round. Saints created a series of chances with Scott Tanser denied a second-half stunner when his 20-yarder hit the bar.

But Buddies boss Robbo believed the winning margin should have been more, claiming Greg Kiltie was hard done by over a pair of goals ruled out for offside. Robinson said: “It’s a credit to Queen of the South who were organised, as we expected, but we dominated the whole game. The two goals which were offside, the second one was definitely onside. It was a great move, it’s stuff we have worked on during the break. The first one, we think he was onside as well. It would have made the game more comfortable.

“We’ve worked on set-plays, we scored one, we should have scored three or four. They haven’t had a shot on target so it shows you how dominant we were but Queen of the South are a very hard side to break down. I’m delighted we kept moving the ball and getting it into key areas.”

Robinson was effusive in his praise as debut Bhoy Kwon played the full 90 minutes – even though it wasn’t the plan for the Celtic loanee heading into the game. The St Mirren boss added: “Kwon’s not played in months, he’s a good player, he just needs game time. We are delighted he got the 90.
