Genk win VAR replay appeal as goal blunder means Anderlecht win won't stand with Belgian precedent set

Philippe Clement's former club KRC Genk have won a landmark decision after having a goal wrongly disallowed in a 2-1 loss to Anderlecht last month - meaning that the game will now have to be replayed.

In the Belgian Pro League clash between the two teams at the Lotto Stadium on Saturday, December 23, the away side thought they had taken the lead when winger Yira Sor found the net from a rebound after former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had saved Bryan Heynen's penalty. But that joy was quickly turned to despair, when following a VAR check, the goal was chalked off after referee Nathan Verboomen and his officials deemed that Yor had encroached inside the penalty area before the spot kick had been taken.

Despite the call, Genk, would go onto take the lead through Alieu Fadera's header 20 minutes from time - only to throw away all three points in a dramatic end to the game.

Theo Leoni got Anderlecht back on level terms with a strike from distance four minutes later and then in the first minute of injury time, the hosts completed the turnaround when ex-St Mirren man Anders Dreyer curled home to clinch the victory.

Clearly incensed by the performance of the officials, Genk boss Wouter Vrancken was then shown a straight red card shortly before the full-time whistle, while midfielder Joseph Pantsil was also dismissed for a second bookable offence.

After the game, the four-time Belgian champions immediately filed a complaint about the conduct of the officials. After their appeal was thrown out, they then issued another statement on January 9, and provided a still image that showed that Sor had not set foot inside the box before Heynen struck his penalty kick.
