Kobbie Mainoo didn't get what he needed from Manchester United senior players vs West Ham

Kobbie Mainoo has a long and promising career ahead of him at Manchester United.

Since being included in the first team against Everton last month, Mainoo has shown a lot of qualities which have been severely lacking this season. His ability to pick the ball up in a deep position and drive forward has delighted fans while his perseverance and passing has also earned him rave reviews.

At times it is easy to forget just how young he is. Just 18-years-old but yet he is playing so confidently in a team devoid of any such characteristics.

However, there was a reminder of the infancy of his career during Saturday's loss to West Ham. A momentary lapse of concentration saw the ball trickle under his foot and straight into the path of Mohammed Kudus who expertly weaved his way through the back line to seal the win for the Iron.

It was a gutting moment for Mainoo and is arguably his first real learning curve in professional football. But while he stood there wishing for the London Stadium turf to swallow him up, where was the senior players to comfort him?

There was no rallying around from the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Jonny Evans etc. instead the task was left to young Willy Kambwala who was making his senior debut. From a United perspective, it was embarrassing to witness.

Of course it is frustrating to concede from a sloppy error but a proper team would have rallied around Mainoo and supported him. What we saw was a team of individuals including senior players who seemed happy to let the youngster take the fall, rather than backing him up.
