Kalvin Phillips' Man City problem amid England snub and £42million transfer conundrum

It goes from bad to worse for Kalvin Phillips.

After opting against a summer exit from Manchester City to fight for his place, Phillips performed a U-turn in January after conceding his best chance of making England's Euro 2024 squad was by playing regularly elsewhere. He joined West Ham on loan, but a string of poor performances have seen him omitted from Gareth Southgate's final squad before the Euros.

With his City career in limbo and England place gone, Phillips must enjoy a strong end to the season to salvage his Euro's hopes and likely his chances of a positive move in the summer.

Not well. His first touch gave away a goal, he's made a number of high-profile mistakes, was sent off at Nottingham Forest and was substituted at half-time last weekend when the Hammers were 2-0 down against Burnley. They would go on to draw 2-2, with Southgate watching on in the stands.

Phillips has only started three league games for West Ham. He was brought on as a substitute in heavy defeats against Manchester United and Arsenal and has struggled to hold down his place - failing to start more than one game in a row.

He has admitted to frustration at his error-strewn start to life in the capital, saying: "They say bad luck comes in threes, so let's hope I've had my three pieces of it [in his first three games] and I can kick on now.
