Kaizer Chiefs rocked by Chippa as title race suffers another blow

Chippa United scored at the death to hand Kaizer Chiefs a 2-1 defeat in their DStv Premiership clash at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

After a pedestrian start to the game, it was the Soweto giants who created the first big opportunity in the 32nd minute when Kgaogelo Sekgota squared the ball for Keagan Dolly. He received it near the penalty spot but he mishit his shot and it was easily saved.

Dolly was involved again a few minutes later as he penetrated the left channel and unleashed a shot, only to find the side-netting.

The Chilli Boys almost sneaked through the opening goal as they found room to exploit in the Chiefs defence. However, a last-ditch tackle prevented a shot.

The deadlock was broken on the stroke of half-time when a pin-point corner kick from Dolly was headed home with conviction by Siyabonga Ngezana to make it 1-0 to Amakhosi.

A controversial piece of officiating then cost Chippa their equaliser. A perfectly-timed cross found Godspower Ighodaro in the Chiefs box and he slotted the finish with ease, but the linesman flagged for offside. The replay showed he was in fact on.

Despite the setback, Chippa found their leveller only two minutes later. Siphelele Luthuli pounced on a loose ball in the Chiefs box and placed his shot into the bottom corner of the goal for 1-1.

Chiefs had a terrific chance to score the winner in the last 10 minutes as Dolly once again got himself into a dangerous area. Unfortunately he sent his attempt wide of the far post.

Chippa United continued to push for the winner and were rewarded in the 89th minute when a free kick from the right flank was headed home via a deflection from Edmilson Dove, who was given the own-goal.
