Kaizer Chiefs go crashing out of MTN8, AmaZulu land first final since 1976

AmaZulu progressed to the final of the MTN8 for the first time since 1976 as they knocked out Kaizer Chiefs on the away goals rule after Sunday's second leg semi-final in Durban ended in a goalless draw.

Usuthu got the crucial away goal in a 1-1 draw last weekend and this time managed to keep the Amakhosi scoreless to advance.

It was a game of limited clear-cut chances, but both sides did have some.

Chiefs almost went behind due to an error from goalkeeper Brandon Peterson, whose pass out from the back was intercepted by Siphesihle Maduna but the attacker failed to capitalise and poked wide.

On the half-hour, George Maluleka looked to have come back to haunt his former employers when he seized upon a loose ball and surged between two defenders before unleashing a trademark powerful long-range effort, but unfortunately for the midfielder, it was straight down the throat of Peterson.

Usuthu's powerful Cameroonian striker then showed his strength by rolling a defender, but he fired into the top of the side netting from an angle.

Khama Billiat replaced Caleb-Bonfils Bimenyimana in the 65th minute and almost made an instant impact, but his shot was parried by strong hands from Usuthu shot-stopper Veli Mothwa.

AmaZulu should have gone ahead in the match after Ethan Brooks released Kwem with a nice through ball but the striker could only blaze over from close range. However, it mattered not as the KZN side made history by making it through to the showpiece match.

AmaZulu will now take on Orlando Pirates in the tournament final.
