Jose Mourinho has made his feelings on Gareth Southgate very clear amid Manchester United links

Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United-linked Gareth Southgate should be able "to do anything" having dealt with the pressure of being England manager.

According to a report by the Daily Star, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has installed the Three Lions chief as his 'No.1 target' to replace Erik ten Hag. As reported by the Manchester Evening News last month, Ten Hag's future is not clear as Ineos continue to get comfortable at Old Trafford.

The report adds that Ratcliffe is 'not convinced' that Ten Hag is the right man to take United forward - even if the club wins the FA Cup this season and secures Champions League qualification. United progressed to the last four of the FA Cup on Sunday, beating Liverpool 4-3 in a dramatic quarter-final at Old Trafford.

As for United's league position, they are currently nine points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race for Champions League qualification. However, a fifth-placed finish could be enough to qualify for Europe's premier club competition because of the UEFA coefficient table, where English clubs' performances in Europe this season can bag an extra spot for the 2024/25 campaign.

As for Southgate, who will watch his England side face Brazil in a friendly this coming Saturday, he has been strongly linked with a return to club management recently ahead of his contract with the Football Association expiring at the end of this year. He has not been involved in club football since leaving Middlesbrough in 2009.

Southgate has overseen an excellent job since becoming England boss in 2016, leading the nation to a World Cup
