Jon Dahl Tomasson issues message on Sam Gallagher’s role at Blackburn Rovers

The Blackburn Rovers striker started the team’s recent pre-season friendly against Accrington Stanley in his usual position through the middle of the attack.

However, when Rovers faced Scottish champions Celtic, the 26-year old found himself starting on the right flank.

Former manager Tony Mowbray utilised the forward in this position last season, and Tomasson has claimed that he could be a real threat going forward if he continues to play in that position.

It was expected that Gallagher would play through the middle under the Dane, but the 45-year old has raised doubts over where he will line up in the team this season with this change.

“He played from the right but he can move whenever he wants,” said Tomasson, via Lancashire Telegraph.

“He has freedom within the structure.

“The four players that were up front, they can move whenever they want.

“We played a very good side, so you didn’t always see that, but the goal was a good one and you could see it there.”

Gallagher scored within 21 seconds against the Scottish giants as Blackburn earned a 2-2 draw. 

Ben Brereton Diaz also added his name to the score sheet as the team prepares for the upcoming Championship campaign.

Blackburn finished 8th last season, with the latest term set to get underway later this month.

Tomasson’s first competitive game in charge at Ewood Park will come against QPR on July 30.

Having this versatility in attack could be quite important for Gallagher’s playing time this season.

It will also make him a much more all round useful player for Tomasson to have in his squad.

That he scored after only 21 seconds illustrates the point that he can pose a dangerous threat in front of goal even from out wide.
