Sammie Szmodics will offer exactly what Jon Dahl Tomasson wants at Blackburn Rovers

Sammie Szmodics is ready to provide Blackburn Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson with the attributes the Ewood boss is seeking from his forward players.

The 26-year-old has completed his move to Ewood Park from Peterborough United, signing a three-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months. Szmodics scored against Rovers last season for Posh and joins up with his new team-mates today ahead of the weekend trip to Swansea City.

He will provide further competition in the fluid Rovers front four and will compete with Bradley Dack - someone the new boy has known for years - for the No.10 role. Blackburn have competition for places in attack with Sam Gallagher, Ben Brereton Diaz, Jack Vale and Ryan Hedges starting on opening day and Dack and Tyrhys Dolan offering added options.

And Szmodics, who scored six league goals last season, is ready to raise his game to earn a spot in the Tomasson XI and feels he has the characteristics to do it with the manager keen to play a pressing game.

"When you play with better players you will have to up your game, which is something I will have to do," he said, speaking to Rovers TV. "There are great attacking options here, I know I am not just going to get into the team. You have to work hard and earn your place and it is something I am ready to do.

"I am a high energy number 10, I can drop in and receive the ball and also run in behind. A lot of my goals come from arriving late in the box and I also enjoy pressing, as weird as it sounds. Winning the ball in high areas and starting the attack from there, so a lot of energy."

Szmodics might come into direct competition with Dack for a spot in the side and the new boy believes competing with and learning from a friend will be beneficial.
