John Lundstram insists Rangers new boys don't need demands lesson as he looks to right Champions League wrongs

John Lundstram lived a childhood dream stepping out in the Champions League group stage last year - even if it quickly turned into a nightmare.

Five starts against Dutch giants Ajax, Serie A champions Napoli and his boyhood club Liverpool might have sounded like the stuff of fantasy for the scouser. The reality was a cold, hard truth that to mix with the best you have to bring your absolute best. Lundstram concedes that was far from the case with Rangers as they lost six out of six, conceding 22 goals on the way to set an unwanted record as the worst group stage performance in Champions League history.

A new season brings new opportunities though and Rangers stand four games away from a chance to right those brutal wrongs. If Lundstram is bruised by last year’s experience he’s doing a good job of hiding it. Nine new faces have arrived to bolster the ranks while Euro stalwarts Allan McGregor, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent have moved on. But the midfielder insists Michael Beale’s squad has improved as a result of the summer overhaul.

And despite Saturday’s rude awakening at Kilmarnock, he is adamant nobody needs to spell out the magnitude of what lies ahead for the new boys. Servette provide the first qualifying hurdle this evening and Lundstram said: “It’s huge. Getting into the Champions League is massive.

“It’s also massive for us as players. It’s one you dream of as a kid to play in so it’s a huge game for us and hugely important to try and put in a good performance. Last year we didn’t quite perform as well as we wanted to. We want to correct that this year and make a better showing of ourselves. We really want to qualify and try and show better of us this season.
