Jermaine Jenas questions commitment of two Manchester United players during Newcastle defeat

Jermaine Jenas has criticised the commitment of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial during Manchester United's 1-0 defeat at Newcastle.

Erik ten Hag's side fell to their 10th defeat of the season and a third away-day Premier League loss against a top-half opponent at St James' Park. Anthony Gordon eventually opened the scoring on 55 minuted for Newcastle, tapping in Kieran Trippier's cross from close range.

But the home side could have been ahead long before and United were far inferior on the night. Antony saw a goal disallowed after the ball hit an offside Harry Maguire but anything other than defeat would have been a lucky escape for the Reds.

Newcastle were particularly dominant in the first-half and were aided by Rashford and Martial upfront. Both were largely ineffective and Jenas believes they were sending a message to Ten Hag.

"I personally thought tonight that there were signs that a couple of players in there for me that either was not happy with the tactics put to them, or wasn’t happy with their positions on the pitch," Jenas told TNT Sports. "But the body language on the pitch tells you a lot at times, and there were a few of them that were sending a message to the manager, I think.

"I thought Marcus Rashford on that right-hand side in particular, the way he just walked around and was throwing his arms around, was one for me where he was saying 'look, I don’t want to be playing here'. No tracking back, you had (Anthony) Martial getting run by Fabian Schar from defence.
