Somehow, a Raheem Sterling-Jadon Sancho transfer swap deal between Chelsea and Manchester United is not even in the top 10 most ridiculous things that could still happen in the summer window, let alone the list of things that have already gone before it. Only these two clubs could think up something as confusing.

Although on the very shallowest face of it there is logic as both sides wish to rid themselves of underperforming and overpaid attackers who have failed to impress over multiple seasons, that is about where the concept of thought ends. Especially for United.

For starters, there is a reasonable argument that Sancho could and perhaps should have a role to play for Erik ten Hag this year. It is not a popular notion that the 24-year-old has something to offer, but it is true.

United aren't about to add any more forwards to their side in the final days of this window and have already said their goodbyes to Facundo Pellistri, so are the club being hasty in looking towards a sale?
