‘It’s funny’ - Eddie Howe responds to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after Manchester United claim

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has responded to praise from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for their victory over Manchester United.

The Magpies produced a dominant display against United at St. James’ Park, last month. It was Anthony Gordon’s goal that proved to be the difference between the two sides, despite Newcastle having 22 shots on goal as they put an end to United’s run of form.

Ten Hag’s side headed into that game on a run of five victories in six and have since lost that level of consistency, winning just two of their next seven league matches. However, Newcastle have fared much worse, losing six games across all competitions in the same period of time to leave themselves ninth in the table.

Liverpool are Newcastle’s next opponents and manager Jurgen Klopp gave a glowing verdict of their performance against United. "I don't think I've ever praised [Newcastle] before, but I saw them playing [vs Man United], and I was really impressed, I have to say 'wow',” he admitted.

"They played the same team, pretty much exactly the same team like in Paris, and that was a big fight. Yes, it was not only a big fight, it was exceptional football, it was a commercial for pressing, counter-pressing and direct football, really good football."

In response, Howe confessed that it is his task to remind his squad what they are capable of as they aim to climb back up the table. United are currently two points of Newcastle in seventh but have played a game more.
