'It's been tough' - Harry Maguire opens up on difficult period after scoring for Manchester United

Harry Maguire has admitted he was delighted to score the matchwinner for Manchester United against FC Copenhagen and he also vowed to kick on after a difficult period in his career.

Erik ten Hag said the game against Copenhagen was a must-win for United, but the away side looked like the better team from the first whistle and they hit the post just a few minutes into the contest.

United's first-half performance was poor and the decision was made to replace Sofyan Amrabat at half-time with Christian Eriksen, who immediately made an impact and provided the team with control in midfield.

Eriksen's influence was obvious and gradually United began to create more chances and ask questions of Copenhagen, which led to the breakthrough moment in the 71st minute thanks to a headed goal from Maguire.

It was Eriksen's cross that fashioned the opportunity for Maguire and his goal looked to be the matchwinner until Scott McTominay conceded a penalty in the last seconds of the four minutes of stoppage time.

Copenhagen's Jordan Larsson stepped up to take the penalty but Onana remarkably saved his effort from the spot. The goalkeeper was swamped by his teammates in celebration and that dramatic save secured the victory.

Maguire spoke to MUTV after the game and he discussed his goal and how pivotal Onana's penalty save could be for the 'keeper.

"It was an amazing ball [from Eriksen]," he said. "It was really tough to get something from a corner tonight, their big centre half kept heading them all away, but it was a second phase and I knew I had the beating of the man that was picking me up.
