“It’s a baby": The haunting words whispered between neighbours on a quiet Saturday morning

“It’s a baby…”

Those were the hushed whispers between neighbours after police revealed a baby’s remains had been found at a house in Wigan. Neighbours here had grown increasingly suspicious of the consistent CSI presence stationed outside a property on Marsh Green since Wednesday (April 10).

But still, nothing prepared them for the news that a young baby had been found dead on their doorstep. Police said the grim discovery was made in the wake of a call from 'a partner agency'.

Crime scene investigators have been working on the street for several days following the 'heartbreaking' discovery. "What the f***," one woman, who lives near the scene, said to her friend as the news broke today.

“I’ve lived here for seven years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” she said. “I’ve got kids. It is worrying.”

Neighbours told the M.E.N they knew the people who live in the house, but that they ‘kept to themselves’. They said they first realised something was wrong when they noticed police on the scene on Wednesday evening - but realised something was gravely wrong when a private ambulance appeared.

“It’s awful,” another neighbour, who lives just over the road, said. “I wouldn’t say this area is quiet per se, but I didn’t expect this. Nobody expected this.”

He said he didn’t pay much attention to the police presence at first, but grew increasingly concerned as the days went on. “I thought it was just a domestic incident at first - I saw a woman come out the house who seemed hysterical", he said.
