Grand National 2024 horses that fell and didn't finish

The winner of the Grand National 2024 was I Am Maximus.

The horse, ridden by Paul Townend, won after a field of 34 started the race at Aintree Racecourse on Saturday afternoon. I Am Maximus was 6/1 going into the race and was among the 17 horses that completed both laps of the course and finished.

The Grand National is renowned as being an incredibly challenging our-mile and two-and-a-half furlong race featuring 30 jumps- 16 fences with 14 of those being jumped twice.

However, a number of horses either fell at one of the fences, unseated their jockey or failed to reach the finish line.

Those included an earlier start time of 4pm instead of the usual 5.15pm, reducing the maximum number of runners from 40 to 34, moving the first fence forward and lowering the height of the 11th fence and scrapping the parade of the field before the race.

Both Run Wild Fred and Chambard were non-runners ahead of the event and thus did not start.

The Jockey Club has confirmed that all the horses returned safely, however, Mac Tottie has been taken into a horse ambulance and will be looked over by veterinarians.

It is estimated that more than 600 million people watched the big race worldwide across 140 countries, including 7.5 million ITV viewers in the UK alone. According to industry research conducted by the Betting and Gaming Council, approximately £250m was set to be staked on the race.
