Inside Duncan Ferguson's Inverness talks as boss reveals crucial call came while he was in the DENTIST chair

Duncan Ferguson was sitting in the dentist’s chair when he took the call to ask if he was interested in filling the vacant Inverness job.

The good thing for Caley Thistle was the fact that he was desperate to get his teeth straight back into management. Now Ferguson, after signing a three year contract, aims to get Inverness fans smiling again by polishing up their struggling team into potential Premier League pushers.

Ferguson revealed: “As it happens, I was stepping into the dentist when Scot Gardiner called me. I was going to get a root canal done. He saved me from the root canal. Inverness were interested in speaking to me. I wasn't in a job. I listened and came up the road as soon as I could. It has been a busy few days and in between times I have been to Stranraer, been to Stirling and been to Liverpool to see my dentist. I haven't had the work done yet. He gave me some tablets. Then I was back at Aviemore, back to Perth and then back up here. I know the roads a lot better now.”

Ferguson had been out of Scottish football for almost 30 years. He, however, has a knowledge of the lower leagues thanks to watching his son, Cameron, on-loan at Forfar Athletic from Newcastle United. Ferguson senior’s move north was the first in some time.

Ferguson admitted: “This is the first time I've been to Inverness since, as my dad told me, we used to go on holiday to Nairn. We got the train up from Stirling and we got the train to Inverness when I was a wee laddie. It's a beautiful part of the world.

"I have been up in the last few months as my lad, who is at Newcastle, is on loan at Forfar. I was at Stranraer against Forfar at the weekend. I’ve got used to it, it is incredible - not just coming here, but my lad’s at Forfar.
