Ian Wright admits Arsenal ‘luck’ with ‘dubious’ referee call vs Manchester United

Ian Wright is not altogether convinced that Arsenal should have been awarded the corner that led to Declan Rice’s stoppage-time winner against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Gunners legend also said his former club received “a bit of luck” when Alejandro Garnacho was adjudged to have been marginally offside in the lead-up to his overruled strike.

Arsenal ran out 3-1 winners after injury-time goals from Rice and Gabriel Jesus, who slotted home on the break when United pushed for a last-gasp equaliser. The game had been locked at 1-1 after first-half efforts from Marcus Rashford and Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard.

United thought they had snatched the win in the 89th minute when Garnacho guided the ball past Aaron Ramsdale until VAR intervened. Buoyed by the overturn, Arsenal surged up the other end in the hunt for their own moment of euphoria and managed to win a corner when Odegaard’s long-ranged effort was deemed to have taken a nick off a United defender.

Rice chested down the resulting corner and fired towards goal, the ball deflecting off substitute Jonny Evans and squeezing past Andre Onana to send the Emirates wild while several United defenders protested about grappling.

Wright claimed he had received intel about the awarding of the corner being less than certain while speaking to Premier League Productions, and conceded Arsenal were on the right side of fortune.

He said: “We got a bit of luck with that offside because it was very, very close. Then Declan came up with the goal right at the death with that corner, which is a dubious corner, I am hearing.”
