I would have this ex Rangers star in my all time XI and there’s a kid who may be every bit as good – Barry Ferguson

I'm about to pay young Ross McCausland a compliment but, before I do, let me make one thing very clear.

Every now and then people ask me to name my best ever Rangers XI and, given some of the players I had the pleasure of calling team-mates during my time at Ibrox, it’s not an easy task. But, even so, there’s one name that always springs straight to mind and he’s a guy who makes that line-up all day long. I’m talking about Neil McCann.

I knew we were getting a good player when we signed Terry from Hearts because I had played against him often enough and he always stood out as someone who could do us a bit of damage. But it wasn’t until we were together on the same side every week that I fully appreciated just how good he was. I knew he could score goals. I realised how tricky he was when he was running at full-backs and whipping crosses into the box. But what I realised when he came to Rangers was the size of his heart. Trust me, if we were ever getting into a scrap out there on the pitch, the wee man was the first in the queue. Terry was just a born winner who would give absolutely everything he had in the tank to make sure we got the result we needed. He was an absolute terrier of a football player. Snapping at ankles and throwing himself into tackles.

I lost count of the amount of times I’d see him actually sprinting back past Arthur Numan to stop an attack from the opposition. And I lapped that stuff up. Put it this way, when I looked around that dressing room before a game and saw Terry pulling on the shirt, I knew there was a guy we could rely on 100 per cent. And that brings me back to my compliment to McCausland because when I was watching him at Livingston the other week, I saw Neil McCann screaming out of him.
