'I told you...' - Ex-SPFL man now reacts to 'strange' update from Rangers

Former Premiership striker Frank McAvennie has now given his reaction to Connor Goldson’s new deal at Glasgow Rangers.

As revealed by the Ibrox club’s official website, the 29-year-old has now signed a new four-year contract with the Light Blues after his existing deal was set to expire this summer.

The defender has followed both Scott Arfield and Steven Davis in extending their contracts with the Gers, as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks to keep the core of his squad together ahead of the 2022/23 campaign starting.

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie has now given his reaction to the news, claiming that Goldson ended up not leaving Rangers because no offers were forthcoming for him, describing the whole situation as ‘strange’.

The former Premiership striker said: “I told you, you are only worth what someone will pay you and no one came in for him.

“The reason he signed is because no one wanted to sign him. The papers can say what they want, the club can say what they want, until an offer comes in, you aren’t worth it.

“It’s a strange one. I knew he would sign. The only offers he will be getting are from Championship clubs. He would have gone to the Premier League if an offer came in.

“He lets the ball go across him like he did against Frankfurt and you can’t do that in the Premier League. Decent centre-halves don’t do that. He is a decent player for Rangers and he will do alright there.

“It keeps continuity so that will be good for them, it’s not a bad signing. I won’t criticise him for what he has done in Scotland but he is not Premier League material.”

McAvennie seems to be somewhat bitter with regards to Goldson’s new contract – after all, the 62-year-old did used to play for Rangers’ arch-rivals Celtic.
