I’m a forgotten Celtic Invincible and celebrated miracle survival after breathless Bundesliga playoff

As the whistle sounded at Hampden back in May 2017, Celtic had achieved something quite remarkable.

Brendan Rodgers and his troops had defeated Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Finalto complete an unbeaten Treble-winning campaign to earn the tag of Invincibles and with that secure one of the biggest achievements of that crops careers and a place in club folklore. In football you can wait a long time for trophies and big moments but for one former Hoops man who was part of that side, it may well not have been an unbeaten season or trophy lift - in fact it was far from it - but it will mean as much to him and his team-mates after an incredible comeback for the ages.

That's right, Cristian Gamboa. Remember the name? If not, a quick reminder that he arrived at Celtic from West Brom during Rodgers' first stint in charge. However, he never established himself as a key figure. On his arrival he penned a three-year deal but managed just 31 appearances across his spell - but was still part of that Invincible Treble and was on the bench at Hampden for the Scottish Cup final win. Following his exit from the club he made the move to Germany in 2019 with Bochum and he's found a home with the club ever since.

It was a tough season in Germany's top flight for Gamboa and his colleagues that ended with them finishing the campaign in the play-off sports to retain their Bundesliga status. They were paired up against Fortuna Dusseldorf from the second tier with the big prize of top flight football next season. And after a horror 90 minutes in front of their own fans and a 3-0 defeat, Bochum went into the second leg away as real underdogs and looking all but doomed to the drop.
