11 players Rangers risk losing for nothing as Philippe Clement’s 'crazy' demand swings into focus again

Philippe Clement didn't hold back on the mismanagement of the Rangers players' contract situation when he spoke earlier this season, branding it a "crazy" situation that half a dozen members of the squad are able to walk out of the Ibrox exit door for nothing this summer.

It comes just 12 months after Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent – a £17million bid for the former knocked back at his peak and the latter costing £7m – did the same just 12 months ago. This time John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin and Leon Balogun are all in the same boat, although the Nigerian centre-back looks set to pen a one-year extension.

Clement addressed the situation at the start of the year when he said: "To have five players out of contract is a crazy situation because you throw away money. They are of no value any more if the contract is ended. We are not the most wealthy club in the world. I know that. You want to get transfer in, that can make an impact now but also have an impact for the next couple of years on the field and selling them for bigger amounts.

"If you look back over the last couple of years that is something the club have missed. You want to have young prospects you can develop and can go to a higher level than Glasgow Rangers. It's a balance. You need to have players that are in contract."

So while Rangers are planning on a summer rebuild and are looking at recruiting, with Nils Koppen scouring the globe for talent, they will also have to be focused on dealing with players who are under contract and ensuring there is no repeat of what has happened in recents seasons. Decisions might have to be made on extensions – or cashing in now or in January.
