Upper floors of former cotton mill set to be converted into 42 flats

More than 40 flats could be created by converting the upper floors of a Bury mill building. The first, second and third floors of Albion Mill on Albion Street are the subject of a planning application to change from retail space into residential use.

Applicant Bracknell Properties Ltd wish to build 42 self-contained flats. The application does not request any changes for the ground floor of the mill will which remain in use in its current guise as a warehouse.

The mill building has recently been marketed on property websites for around £2.5M and is currently listed as sold. The mill is west of Bury Bury town centre, off Bolton Road.

Planning documents published by Bury Council in the past week, state: “The proposal suggests converting the pre-existing first, second and third floors of the above four-storey building which contains retail accommodation, into 42 flats in total. “The external building footprint will remain unchanged, with no plans for expansion or extension of the existing structure.

“Essentially, the proposals entail refurbishing the current retail building to accommodate residential use. “The current proposals propose 19 car parking spaces including three disabled spaces and two electric spaces.

“Secure and covered storage with spaces for 40 cycles are also proposed. “Due to the location of the apartments, it is thought that the residents will not necessarily require or need the use of their own cars as public transport is
reliable, well-sourced and accessible.”

The plans say nine of the flats would be two-bedroom with suitable for up to four people with the remaining 33 units one-bedroom to house one or two people. Planners at Bury Council will consider
