I heard what Jordan Pickford said before one of Manchester United's penalties – it didn't work

Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime with a 2-0 win over Everton.

First half penalties from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford sealed a hard-fought victory for Erik ten Hag's side, moving them back to within eight points of fourth place. United came through an early Everton storm and got their noses in front after just 12 minutes via Fernandes' first Premier League goal of 2024.

Rashford was then handed the chance to double United's advantage just over 20 minutes later and he duly obliged, putting a low effort past England teammate Jordan Pickford. United had opportunities to increase their tally, but they failed to make the most of the chances that came their way.

United will now be hoping that top four rivals Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently fourth and fifth respectively, cancel each other out when they meet at Villa Park on Sunday. The Reds are currently eight points behind Villa and three off Spurs.

After weathering an early Everton storm, United, went in front against the run of play with just 12 minutes gone. Fernandes coolly dispatched a penalty into the bottom corner, marking his first league goal since November 4.

The penalty was awarded after James Tarkowski brought Alejandro Garnacho down inside the box. There was a small delay while VAR reviewed the incident, ensuring that on-field referee Simon Hooper had made the right call to point to the spot.
